Amazingly soft baby quilt designed, pieced and quilted by Texas fiber artist Kate Hunter.

Kate is a quilt designer and quilting instructor who makes her home in Fredericksburg. While she specializes in travel quilts, she has gerneously donated this baby quilt for her granddaughter's theatre program.  "My specialties are quilts inspired by travel, wall hangings that capture travel memories, and techniques that can be used to capture the travel themes.  The wall hangings are an opportunity to show off souvenirs gathered while traveling and also provide a small project that is perfect for trying out new techniques."

My grandmother Hazel loved the sparkle of carnival glass and had a large collection of it. She also loved her flowers, something that she got from her mother Mary.

Mary grew up on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, but below stairs. Her mother cooked for the Vanderbilt family and her father Dinker helped develop the vines that grow the wines you can buy today from the Biltmore Winery. As Mary was nearly the same age as the Vanderbilt's daughter Cornelia, Mary and Cornelia spent plenty of time together on the estate. Since Mrs. Vanderbilt (Edith) was described as “plain as an old shoe” who was known for plopping down to have a bite of cake in the kitchens of the people in the estate community, this odd family story makes sense.

This flowered vase reminds me of my grandmother and the impression that the Biltmore Estate made on my family.

Hand drawn with recycled liquefied Texas King Cotton fiber pulp, steeped in natural dyes and local water, the liquid images are assembled on screens, and transferred onto drying blankets where they dry into complete sheets of paper.

Acclaimed artist, Mark Goad, inspires a depth of vision unique to the semi-abstract images of his beloved Texas landscapes and its people. Long-standing concern for the environment spurred Mark’s interest in a more organic form of expression early in the 1980’s. Trained in painting and sculpting and graduating with a B.A. in printmaking from the University of Dallas, Mark combined the three art forms to develop an effective blend of liquid, cotton fiber steeped in natural dyes and Texas well water.

The Texas Rowing Center is a rowing and kayaking concession located at the best location on beautiful Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas.  Since 1987, they have taught over 10,000 people to row using their simple learn-to-row program.  They have several hundred active members, and many more visit their concession weekly to rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards.
